Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has asserted that the establishment of a Palestinian state represents the “most reliable” avenue toward resolving the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Lavrov emphasized that solely combatting terrorism would not suffice to ensure security and peace in the region. During a press conference alongside Arab League Head Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Lavrov expressed, “Creating a Palestinian state that would coexist with Israel…is the most reliable path to solve (the conflict).”
Lavrov further stressed, “We cannot agree with those who say that security can only be ensured through a fight with terrorism.” He voiced deep concern over the loss of lives, with hundreds of casualties among Israelis and Palestinians, and the designation of the Gaza Strip as a target for Israeli reprisals.
The Russian foreign minister also raised questions about Western policy regarding Israel, suggesting that previous approaches failed to address the root causes of the conflict adequately. He emphasized that the Palestinian issue should not be further delayed.
Additionally, Lavrov underlined Russia’s commitment, in collaboration with the Arab League, to work towards “stopping the bloodshed” in both Israel and Gaza. Aboul Gheit echoed these sentiments, condemning violence from all sides and advocating for political prospects and a just resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Amid rising tensions, the Kremlin expressed concerns about the potential for external actors to become involved in the conflict. This apprehension emerged following the positioning of US warships in proximity to its ally Israel. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, emphasized the urgency of finding a negotiated solution and de-escalating the situation to prevent further military actions.
This diplomatic stance reflects Russia’s efforts to contribute to peace and stability in the region while highlighting the importance of addressing the longstanding Palestinian-Israeli conflict comprehensively.
