In a significant development, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that advocates for the implementation of an indigenous train protection system known as ‘Kavach.’ The court has directed the Central government to provide comprehensive information about the measures taken or planned to install advanced anti-collision systems, such as ‘Kavach,’ aimed at preventing train accidents.

Initially displaying some reluctance, the apex court sought detailed insights into the potential financial implications of introducing the ‘Kavach’ system on a nationwide scale. However, it eventually decided to entertain the PIL, recognizing the paramount importance of leveraging technology to ensure passenger safety. The court emphasized the significance of adopting state-of-the-art systems similar to those successfully employed in other countries.

The PIL, initiated by a Supreme Court advocate, addresses the imperative need for embracing advanced technology to effectively control and minimize train accidents, ultimately enhancing the safety of passengers.
