CAPE TOWN – The recently concluded second Test match between India and South Africa at Newlands stirred up a significant debate over the quality of the pitch. While Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed his dissatisfaction, terming it a track of concern, South African cricket legend AB de Villiers provided a different perspective, dismissing worries and calling it a “pretty stock-standard” wicket.
The Test match, which lasted only 107 overs, raised eyebrows as 23 wickets fell on Day 1 and 10 more by the second afternoon. Rohit Sharma, visibly upset, criticized the Cape Town pitch, contributing to the ongoing discussions about the nature of pitches in international cricket.
In contrast, AB de Villiers shared his views on his YouTube channel, stating, “It (Cape Town) was a pretty stock-standard wicket, in my opinion. I remember jumping around there on Day 1. If you can just get through the first session on Day 1, it gets easier.”
De Villiers further highlighted the challenge of facing bowlers like Vernon Philander, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Kagiso Rabada, emphasizing the need for batsmen to adapt.
Despite the diverse opinions on the pitch, India secured a seven-wicket victory, leveling the series. Rohit Sharma, in his post-match comments, went beyond expressing discontent with the pitch, addressing the International Cricket Council (ICC) and advocating for neutral evaluations of pitches.
