BCCI to Discuss Rohit Sharma’s White-Ball Cricket Plans

As the aftermath of India’s World Cup final loss settles in, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gears up for crucial discussions with Captain Rohit Sharma and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. The primary focus will be on gaining clarity regarding Rohit’s future in white-ball cricket and the strategic grooming of a future captain.

Sources indicate that Rohit Sharma has expressed his willingness to forego consideration for T20 Internationals. However, given the selectors’ inclination towards nurturing young talents, the dialogue will delve into Rohit’s role in One Day Internationals (ODIs). With the next ODI World Cup slated for 2027 in South Africa, where Rohit will be nearly 40, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, discussions will be vital to chart the course for India’s ODI format.

While Shreyas Iyer’s return to Test cricket and Shubman Gill’s presence at No. 3 limit opportunities for Ajinkya Rahane, the selectors contemplate KL Rahul as a potential backup wicketkeeper for Test matches.

The BCCI anticipates that Rohit Sharma will focus extensively on Test cricket for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle until 2025. A key agenda item will be the grooming of a captain for the longer formats, considering the intermittent unavailability of Hardik Pandya due to injuries.

India’s T20 World Cup preparations face a setback as Hardik Pandya, the captain for T20Is, is likely to remain sidelined until the end of January 2024 due to an ankle ligament tear.

The selection committee’s commitment to building a player pool is evident in overlooking Yuzvendra Chahal and Sanju Samson for the home T20I series against Australia.
