ICC Suspends Sri Lanka Cricket Board over political meddlling

In a decisive move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket, citing a substantial breach of its obligations as a member, particularly in failing to autonomously manage its affairs and prevent government interference. This action follows allegations of financial misconduct and pressure from Sri Lanka’s parliament, which unanimously urged the board’s resignation over accusations of misappropriating millions of dollars, made by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe.

The suspension’s implications, including potential consequences for hosting the Under 19 World Cup in January, will be deliberated by the ICC board at a later date. While an official response from the cricket board is pending, sources indicate an emergency executive committee meeting is scheduled to address the situation, with particular concern for the hosting rights of the upcoming tournament.

The cricket board’s crisis reached a pinnacle after Sri Lanka’s disheartening World Cup loss to India, prompting parliamentary intervention. In a unanimous, non-binding resolution, the Sri Lankan parliament called for the resignation of Sri Lanka Cricket’s elected board members, citing allegations of unprecedented corruption. The board, the nation’s wealthiest sporting entity, has yet to respond to this resolution.

The ongoing turmoil involves legal battles, as the sports minister dismissed the board earlier in the week, a decision overturned by the Court of Appeal pending further hearings. The ICC, which has strict rules against political interference, has taken similar actions against Sri Lanka in the past.

Despite the suspension, Sports Minister Ranasinghe expressed optimism before the ICC decision, hoping for constructive dialogue to resolve the situation. The cricket board faces a precarious situation, with potential repercussions for its hosting commitments and its reputation on the global cricket stage.
