In a recent statement, former India pacer Ashish Nehra delved into the potential captaincy challenges facing Team India at the upcoming T20 World Cup. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma opting out of the white-ball leg in the upcoming South Africa tour, the question of captaincy for the T20 World Cup gains significance.
Nehra acknowledged the absence of Rohit and Kohli in the T20Is, emphasizing that if fit, they could make a return to the format. However, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya sidelined due to injury, the captaincy situation becomes tricky. Nehra, who worked with Pandya during their time at Gujarat Titans in the IPL, expressed uncertainty about Pandya’s return timeline.
Regarding the potential return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to T20Is, Nehra stated, “If they are fit, we do not need to discuss their form. Definitely, they will be there in the Caribbean and USA.”
Highlighting the complexity of the situation, Nehra commented on Pandya’s injury, stating, “If Hardik Pandya plays straight in the IPL, it will be difficult for any selection committee.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squads for the South Africa tour, confirming Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain and KL Rahul taking over the leadership reins in ODIs.
