New Delhi, In a surprising turn of events, Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, will not lead the side in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Instead, Dravid will oversee preparations for the two-match Test series, joining the red-ball squad during a three-day inter-squad match starting December 20 in Pretoria.

The decision, announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), indicates a strategic move to prioritize India’s quest for a maiden Test series win in South Africa. Dravid, along with the entire support staff, including batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, will not be part of the ODI series coinciding with the red-ball inter-squad match. The ODIs are scheduled for the 17th, 19th, and 21st of December, while the Test series begins on the 26th.

This development highlights the significance India places on Test cricket, with the coaching staff focusing on the red-ball format to ensure optimal preparation for the upcoming Test series.

Rahul Dravid, who recently led the Indian team to a drawn T20 series, will concentrate on both the shortest and longest formats, with an emphasis on the T20 World Cup in June and the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. This shift in focus aligns with the current landscape where ODI matches are relatively scarce for Team India.

Contrary to expectations, VVS Laxman will not step in as the replacement head coach for the ODI series. Instead, Sitanshu Kotak, a former batter and a member of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) support staff, will assume the role. Kotak, who recently served as the batting coach in the T20I series against Australia, will be joined by India A’s coaching staff, including bowling coach Rajib Datta and fielding coach Ajay Ratra.

As India gears up for the South Africa tour, where they aim for Test glory, the coaching dynamics undergo a strategic shift, reflecting the team’s commitment to excelling in the traditional format.
