Paris, In a historic feat, Uganda secured its inaugural appearance at the cricket World Cup, triumphing in the T20 regional qualifiers for the upcoming tournament hosted by the West Indies and the United States. The East African nation secured the coveted spot with a resounding nine-wicket victory over Rwanda, capping off an impressive performance in the African regional qualifying event held in Windhoek.
Uganda’s stellar form, including a convincing win by bowling Rwanda out for a mere 65 runs, propelled them to second place in the qualifiers, joining Namibia as representatives in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Notably, Zimbabwe, despite a victory over Kenya, found themselves eliminated from contention.
This achievement marks Uganda as the last of the 20 teams to qualify for the T20 World Cup, positioning them as the fifth African nation to grace the prestigious tournament. Namibia, the qualifying hosts, had already secured their place earlier with a commanding 58-run win over Tanzania on Tuesday, ensuring their third consecutive appearance in the T20 World Cup.
The disappointment for Zimbabwe, a seasoned participant in six of the eight previous editions, continues as they miss out for the second time in three tournaments. The absence from the 2021 showpiece stemmed from the International Cricket Council’s suspension of Zimbabwe’s membership due to government interference.
