Chennai: As Team India gears up for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, selectors face a dilemma over the inclusion of cricket icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is reportedly considering external factors, fueling speculation that only one of the two stalwarts might make the cut.

Despite Team India’s commendable performance in South Africa, questions loom over Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s T20 contributions in 2023. While Rohit Sharma showcased aggressive prowess in the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli’s T20 average prompts selectors to reevaluate his role in the squad.

A former national selector expressed concerns over team balance, stating, “If you have Rohit, Shubman Gill, Virat, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik constituting your top five, then where is your left-hander?” The panel grapples with the challenge of accommodating both players or making a bold decision to drop one.

External factors, including promotional campaigns featuring players like Kohli in New York and aerial adverts of Rohit Sharma, add complexity to the decision-making process. Former BCCI office-bearers suggest the need for strategic decisions and emphasize monitoring IPL performances before making promises for the World T20.

Ajit Agarkar’s committee seeks empowerment from BCCI President Jay Shah in navigating these decisions. The consensus leans towards including both players for the Afghanistan series and closely monitoring their IPL performances.

The impending T20 World Cup squad announcement keeps cricket enthusiasts on the edge as selectors navigate the delicate balance between experience and emerging talent.
