Australia’s cricket star, Mitchell Marsh, claimed the prestigious Allan Border medal for the men’s player of the year during Cricket Australia’s awards night. Marsh’s remarkable 2023, marked by a stellar Test comeback and clinching the ODI World Cup in India, earned him the top honor.

The 32-year-old all-rounder expressed his gratitude to captain Pat Cummins for his unwavering support and leadership during an emotional acceptance speech. Fighting back tears, Marsh credited Cummins for changing his life and providing him with the opportunity for a comeback.

“I’m a bit fat at times and I love a beer, but you see the best in me always, and you’ve changed my life. For your support and your leadership, Patty, playing under you is a dream,” Marsh emotionally expressed during the event.

Marsh’s outstanding performances across formats contributed to his success. In Test matches, he scored 594 runs in six games at an average of 66. In ODIs, he amassed 858 runs with an average of 47.66 and an impressive strike rate of 113.94. Notably, his unbeaten 177 against Bangladesh in the ODI World Cup showcased his batting prowess.

The award night also saw Nathan Lyon securing the Test Player of the Year title, while Jason Behrendorff claimed the T20I honor. The Australian team is set to return to action on February 2, facing West Indies in the first of three ODIs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
