In a bold move, top wrestler Vinesh Phogat has decided to return both the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award and the Arjuna award. This decision follows protests by elite wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections, where Sanjay Singh, a close associate of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, secured the presidency.

Brij Bhushan faces accusations of sexual harassment against female wrestlers during his tenure. In response to the month-long protests and criticism surrounding the elections, the Sports Ministry suspended the WFI, prompting the Indian Olympic Association to form an interim panel.

Despite the suspension, wrestlers demand action against Brij Bhushan. Vinesh Phogat’s symbolic return of awards underscores the ongoing dissatisfaction with the situation. The athletes insist on accountability, emphasizing that their protests will persist until appropriate action is taken.

Sanjay Singh, denying close association with Brij Bhushan, intends to discuss the matter with PM Modi and explore legal options if resolution through dialogue proves elusive.

The sports community remains in turmoil, awaiting further developments as discussions with the central government unfold.
