Global shipping leaders, including Maersk and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co, are gearing up to restart operations in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Enhanced safety measures, implemented by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations and the Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG), have paved the way for potential resumption.
On December 27, the U.S. military reported successfully intercepting over 12 drone missiles launched by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. No ships were damaged, and there were no reported injuries. The OPG, a coalition led by the U.S., responded to attacks by Houthi militants on Red Sea shipping.
Maersk, a Denmark-based shipping company, has already announced its preparations to resume Red Sea voyages, while MSC Mediterranean is expected to decide on operations around the Suez Canal in a high-level meeting on December 27.
Major shipping lines like CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd are yet to announce the resumption of services. However, industry experts anticipate a swift return to operations with the deployment of the OPG, providing a boost to global shipping.
India remains optimistic about the restoration of order and the prompt resumption of global supply chains. While some uncertainties persist, the authorities believe the current disruptions will likely be short-term.
The attacks on commercial ships in the Suez Canal region, primarily by Houthi rebels, triggered temporary suspensions by shipping giants AP Moller-Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd. The companies, accounting for 53% of global maritime trade, rerouted some services through the Cape of Good Hope, causing delays of 19-30 days.
Approximately 12% of global trade passes through the 193-km long Suez Canal, making it a crucial sea link between Asia and Europe. India’s imports and exports, including vital shipments of crude, are significantly impacted. The disruptions have prompted a closer look at alternative routes to ensure the stability of global supply chains.
The situation remains fluid, and the international community closely monitors developments, working collaboratively to address challenges such as piracy and maintain the freedom of shipping.
