Tamil Nadu tragedy: toxic liquor claims 10 lives, over 20 hospitalized

Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district has been struck by a tragic incident where 10 people have died and over 20 have fallen ill after consuming suspected toxic local liquor.** Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a CB-CID investigation into the incident and has taken immediate administrative actions. District Collector Shravan Kumar Jatavath has been transferred and replaced by MS Prashant. Additionally, Kallakurichi’s SP Samay Singh Meena has been suspended, with Rajat Chaturvedi appointed as the new SP. Several police officers have also been suspended.

Illegal Liquor Vendor Arrested

The government has reported the arrest of 49-year-old Kannukutti, an illegal liquor vendor. Analysis of 200 liters of seized illicit liquor revealed the presence of the deadly methanol.

Previous Tragedy in 2023

Last year, Tamil Nadu faced a similar tragedy with toxic liquor, resulting in 21 deaths—13 in Villupuram and 8 in Chengalpattu.

Gurugram Police Busts Illegal Liquor Distillery

In a related incident, Gurugram police used a drone on June 11 to uncover an illegal liquor distillery, arresting seven people. The raid in the hilly area near Rithoj village in Sohna led to the seizure of 1,600 liters of raw liquor materials and 50 liters of raw liquor.
