Taipei, Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, asserted that the relationship between Taiwan and China should be determined by the will of the people and grounded in peace and dignity. This follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s statement claiming that reunification with Taiwan is inevitable.
As tensions rise, with China increasing military pressure on Taiwan, President Tsai emphasized the importance of democracy in deciding the course of relations with China. She stated, “This is taking the joint will of Taiwan’s people to make a decision. After all, we are a democratic country.”
Addressing Xi’s comments, Tsai urged China to respect the outcome of Taiwan’s election, emphasizing the responsibility of both sides to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
As Taiwan prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13, China has framed the election as a choice between war and peace. Despite multiple offers for talks by Tsai, China views her as a separatist.
Tsai highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to global diversification for economic stability, urging Taiwanese companies to explore opportunities beyond China.
