In a surprising turn of events, Hardik Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024 has raised eyebrows and generated speculation. The prodigious all-rounder, who led the Gujarat Titans to an IPL title last year and finished as a runner-up this year, was unexpectedly appointed as the captain of MI, replacing Rohit Sharma after his 11-season leadership.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar finds Hardik’s move “shocking,” considering his success with the Gujarat Titans. Pandya’s leadership led GT to two consecutive IPL finals, winning one title. Gavaskar believes that the reasons behind Pandya’s switch might go beyond common fan understanding, suggesting that Pandya’s growing stature as a player could be a contributing factor.

Gavaskar, in his column for The Mid-Day, stated, “When a successful captain wants to leave a successful franchise, then the reasons are beyond a common fan’s thinking.” He acknowledged the speculation surrounding Pandya’s transfer to MI and highlighted that Pandya, from being picked as a raw talent, had now become one of the biggest names in the cricketing world.

Hardik Pandya, who already captains India’s T20I team unofficially, has now taken over the leadership at MI. Reports suggest that Pandya laid down a condition for his return – captaincy or no return. MI, considering the need for a change in leadership, especially after three title-less seasons, opted for Pandya as the new captain. Gavaskar added that another contributing factor to Pandya’s return is his emotional connection with MI, considering the franchise as his “home.”

The ongoing discussions around Pandya’s unexpected move continue, leaving fans and experts intrigued about the dynamics behind this significant decision.
