New Delhi, In a historic move, Foxconn chairman Young Liu, a distinguished figure in the global technology landscape, has been awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor. Liu, a Taiwanese national, is the sole foreign recipient among the 132 individuals honored this year on the occasion of the 75th Republic Day.
Who is Young Liu?
– Since 2019, Young Liu has steered Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and proprietor of the largest iPhone factory.
– With over four decades of entrepreneurial experience, Liu founded three successful companies, showcasing his leadership in the tech industry.
– Holding an MS degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California (1986) and a BS degree in Electrophysics from Taiwan’s National Chiao Tung University (1978), Liu brings a wealth of knowledge to his role.
In a notable meeting in July, Young Liu engaged with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Semicon India 2023 conference in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar. This encounter followed Foxconn’s withdrawal from a $20 billion joint venture, Vedanta Foxconn Semiconductors Limited, aimed at establishing India’s first chip manufacturing plant. Despite the withdrawal, Foxconn expressed its intentions to independently pursue the development of a semiconductor manufacturing plant in the country.
President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 132 Padma Awards, including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, on the eve of Republic Day. Noteworthy among the awardees are actor Mithun Chakraborty, BJP veteran Ram Naik, late actor Vijaykanth, singer Usha Uthup, and others from various fields. These awards, recognizing exceptional and distinguished service, are annually conferred by the President in ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
