In the latest incident of heightened tensions in the Red Sea, a cargo ship en route to Israel was struck by a projectile launched from rebel-controlled Yemen, according to a US official. The targeted vessel, owned by German transport company Hapag-Lloyd, suffered damage from an aerial attack near the Yemeni coastal city of Mocha. The ongoing conflict in Yemen continues to pose significant threats to maritime security in the region.

The US defense official reported, “We are aware that something launched from a Houthi-controlled region of Yemen struck this vessel, which was damaged, and there was a report of a fire.” Iran-backed rebels have previously declared their intention to target ships heading to Israel, resulting in near-daily attacks. While many of these attempts have been unsuccessful, the situation has prompted the deployment of US, French, and British warships in the area to protect vessels.

The projectile hit the port side of the vessel, causing a container to fall overboard due to the impact. A fire on the deck was reported over radio communication. The targeted nature of the strike underscores the complexities and risks associated with the conflict in Yemen, emphasizing the continued volatility in the region.

Naval forces from various nations have been actively intercepting and neutralizing threats, showcasing the increased militarization and tensions in the Red Sea. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing geopolitical dynamics at play in this strategically significant area.
