New Delhi: On Thursday, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy. Kejriwal was released on a bond of Rs 1 lakh. The court also dismissed the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) request to stay the bail order for 48 hours.
Kejriwal, who had been in jail since March 21, was previously granted temporary bail to campaign for his party during the Lok Sabha elections last month. The court has imposed strict conditions on his bail, including prohibiting him from interfering with the investigation or influencing witnesses. Kejriwal is required to appear before the court whenever summoned and must cooperate fully with the investigation.
Special Judge Niyay Bindu issued the bail order after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense. The prosecution sought to connect Kejriwal with the alleged proceeds of crime and co-accused individuals, while the defense argued that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to support their claims against the AAP leader.
Just a day before, on Wednesday, Kejriwal’s judicial custody had been extended until July 3. The judge reserved the bail order earlier in the day after reviewing the arguments presented.
Following the bail decision, AAP leader Atishi expressed relief and optimism, stating “Satyamev Jayate” (truth alone triumphs). Punjab Chief Minister and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann also voiced his support on social media, saying, “We have faith in the court… Kejriwal gets bail… truth wins.”
Kejriwal’s arrest was based on allegations of financial irregularities in the excise policy, prompting a high-profile investigation by the ED. The case has garnered significant public and political attention, with various reactions from political figures and the public alike.
AAP stated, “Truth can be troubled, but not defeated,” echoing a sentiment of resilience and confidence in the judicial process.
