The Delhi High Court has preserved its decision on the petition filed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal’s petition challenges his arrest in connection with money laundering related to the Delhi liquor scam.
Today, Wednesday, the court heard his petition. Arguments were presented by both parties. Senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Amit Desai appeared on behalf of Kejriwal. On the other hand, ASG SV Raju representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) objected to this. ASG SV Raju objected to the manner in which the arguments presented on behalf of the petitioner were akin to a bail application rather than a plea to quash the arrest. He stated that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages and has not concluded.
ASG SV Raju argued in court that the excuse of elections is being used merely to divert the court’s attention from the main issue. An attempt is being made to conceal scams worth hundreds of crores. He mentioned that a large number of mobile phones have been destroyed. You work through intermediaries, and when things come to you, you say, “I don’t know anything, I haven’t done anything.”
He further emphasized that criminals are supposed to be arrested and put in jail. “I can commit murder and commit rape but say to the police.. no no no don’t arrest me…elections are near. Any political leader will come and say, We will get immunity because elections are near…This is…”
Prior to this, in the High Court, advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, raised questions about the arrest. He criticized the arrest of Kejriwal without interrogation and statements being taken. Singhvi stated that this is not a case of money laundering. He mentioned that the ED has no evidence that Kejriwal was involved in money laundering. It is noteworthy that before this, the ED had declared Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as the main accused in the Delhi liquor scam and arrested him.
