Washington, D.C. – In a significant diplomatic move, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, engaged in a high-level discussion with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. The meeting, taking place after Jaishankar’s address to the 78th General Assembly session of the United Nations, focused on the substantial progress made in bilateral relations between the two nations and explored avenues for further cooperation.
Jaishankar, who arrived in Washington, D.C., following his UN address, is also scheduled for a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken later in the day. The talks mark the highest-level dialogue between India and the United States since the recent G-20 summit held in New Delhi.
While this meeting was arranged before the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, it holds particular significance in light of the Canadian crisis. The US has urged India to collaborate in the Canadian investigation into the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has raised concerns about potential involvement of Indian government agents in the incident, allegations that India has firmly rejected.
In addition to discussions on these pressing matters, Jaishankar is expected to engage with senior officials of the Biden administration, reviewing the progress achieved between India and the US since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic State Visit in June. The agenda also encompasses conversations on regional and global issues, as well as interactions with the Indian community and corporate leaders.
This visit serves as a testament to the evolving dynamics of India-US relations and their commitment to address complex issues on the global stage.
