The ABC’s New Year’s Eve fireworks coverage is facing criticism for incorporating controversial performances, including a rap song by Indigenous group 3% and singer Angie McMahon’s pro-Palestine comment.
The 9 pm fireworks display, renamed ‘Calling Country’ by the Left-wing City of Sydney Council, showcased a projection of the children’s show Bluey on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Following this, a rap performance by 3% stirred controversy with lyrics referencing historical issues of colonization and the Stolen Generation.
Viewers expressed dissatisfaction, accusing the ABC of promoting a “woke agenda” and “government propaganda” during a family-friendly event. The choice of divisive songs for the celebration drew criticism, with calls to “#Defund ABC.”
The broadcast also featured singer Angie McMahon, who, after singing Sinead O’Connor’s ‘Nothing Compares to You,’ made a statement on the Israel-Palestine conflict, asserting, “Palestinians should be free.” Many viewers found this remark inappropriate and irrelevant to the occasion.
Critics labeled McMahon a “wannabe activist,” questioning the need for “painful political statements” in taxpayer-funded performances. Aboriginal Australian Warren Mundine expressed his disapproval, calling the politicization of New Year’s Eve entertainment by the ABC “disgraceful.”
An ABC spokesman defended the broadcast, emphasizing its diverse celebration of Australian culture and music, featuring renowned artists. Despite the controversy, the event aimed to showcase inclusivity and Aboriginal culture through various performances.
