In his New Year’s address, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that China’s “reunification” with Taiwan is an unavoidable reality. This statement, more assertive than his previous year’s address, comes less than two weeks before Taiwan’s elections.
Xi emphasized that the reunification is a “historical inevitability” and that “China will surely be reunified.” While he did not directly mention military actions, China has not ruled out the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
The official English translation quoted Xi as saying, “Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.” Xi’s address signals a stronger stance compared to the previous year, emphasizing the inevitability of the reunification.
Taiwan, claimed by Beijing as its “sacred territory,” will soon elect a new leader. The current Vice President Lai Ching-te, a presidential candidate from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Party (DPP), has been labeled a dangerous separatist by Beijing.
Xi’s latest remarks highlight the growing tension between China and Taiwan, suggesting a firm stance on reunification despite international concerns.
