In a concerning development off the coast of Yemen, a vessel reported two explosions in the Red Sea shortly after sighting two unmanned aircraft. The incident, which occurred approximately 50 miles from the port of Hodeidah on Yemen’s west coast, raises alarms amidst heightened tensions in the region.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued an advisory revealing that the explosions took place around 5 miles from the vessel. The vessel, whose identity and cargo details remain undisclosed, was in contact with coalition forces, and both the vessel and crew have been confirmed safe. The voyage is reported to continue without interruption.

This incident follows a recent announcement by the United States regarding a multinational maritime security initiative in the Red Sea, a response to attacks on vessels by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The Iran-backed Houthi militia has been targeting commercial vessels in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, claiming to focus on Israeli-linked vessels.

The Houthis have explicitly warned shipping companies against dealing with Israeli ports, prompting some to reroute their operations around Africa. The group vows to persist in its attacks until Israel halts its actions, even threatening to target U.S. warships if provoked.

The maritime tensions in the Red Sea have escalated over the past weeks, with multiple incidents involving Houthi attacks on vessels. The international community closely monitors the situation, considering the strategic significance of the Red Sea waterway.
