Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) government at the Centre for reneging on its promise to extend safeguards outlined in the sixth schedule of the Constitution to Ladakh. In response, Wangchuk urged people worldwide to participate in congregations and observe a one-day fast on March 24.
Wangchuk, who has been on a fast-unto-death for 13 days advocating Ladakh’s inclusion under the Constitution’s sixth schedule, emphasized the significance of the issue despite enduring sub-zero temperatures.
Addressing the breach of trust by the Centre, Wangchuk highlighted the significance of integrity in leadership, calling for the restoration of basic democracy in Ladakh. He urged global support for their cause, emphasizing the need to hold congregations and fasts on March 24.
The demand for Ladakh’s inclusion under the sixth schedule and statehood has been a longstanding issue. Talks between the Centre and Ladakh’s sub-committee leaders have reached an impasse, sparking discontent among the populace.
The region, with one Lok Sabha seat, is witnessing growing resentment towards the BJP government, with potential boycotts of the upcoming general elections looming.
The sub-committee, comprising representatives from Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), was formed under the High Powered Committee (HPC) headed by Union Minister Nityanand Rai to address demands related to the sixth schedule and statehood.
