External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stressed the importance of developing international relations infused with ‘Indian characteristics.’ Addressing a round-table conference in St Petersburg, Jaishankar highlighted the need for direct understanding among nations in the current geopolitical landscape.
Jaishankar emphasized the significance of communication, relationship-building, and mutual understanding, stating, “In this rebalancing, it is also important… to develop international relations with Indian characteristics is my major preoccupation.” The External Affairs Minister expressed his commitment to delve into India’s cultural reservoir and knowledge.
Speaking to Indologists, scholars specializing in Indian literature, history, and philosophy, Jaishankar underlined that Indology goes beyond knowledge and scholarship, serving as an effort to directly understand society. He acknowledged the crucial role of intellectuals in setting directions and contributing to societal understanding.
Jaishankar reflected on India’s economic progress, approaching a USD 4 trillion economy, and outlined efforts to achieve developed country status in the next 25 years. He emphasized that development encompasses not only economic growth but also a deep-rooted awareness and pride in traditions, heritage, and culture.
