In a recent disclosure from the Ministry of Personnel, it has been revealed that a significant 63% of candidates recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the Civil Services Examinations (Mains) between the years 2017-2021 hailed from an engineering background. The UPSC, conducting the Civil Services Examinations annually, saw a total of 4,371 candidates successfully clearing the Mains examination during this period.

Breaking down the data, a notable 2,783 candidates emerged from the engineering stream, followed by 1,033 from humanities, 315 from the science stream, and 240 candidates with a background in medical science. Further analysis unveils that 597 postgraduates specializing in humanities and 243 in engineering successfully navigated through the rigorous examinations.

For a closer look at the demographic nuances, the numbers of candidates recommended for the Mains varied across the years: 1,056 (2017), 812 (2018), 922 (2019), 833 (2020), and 748 (2021). Women candidates securing success in these examinations numbered 254, 193, 220, 238, and 201 during the respective years.

The language diversity in writing among the recommended candidates during the last five years encompassed Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, English, Dogri, and Maithili.

Additionally, the report delves into the optional subjects chosen by the successful candidates, with political science and international relations, sociology, anthropology, and geography emerging as popular choices for the Mains examination.

This statistical breakdown provides valuable insights into the educational backgrounds, gender representation, and subject preferences of candidates excelling in the UPSC Civil Services Examinations over the specified period.
