Today marks the anniversary of the execution of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, who were hanged inside Lahore Central Jail on March 23, 1931. These revolutionary leaders had assassinated British junior police officer John Saunders in Lahore in 1928.
The execution was scheduled for March 24, but was advanced by 11 hours due to fears among the British authorities. When they were taken to the gallows, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were singing jovially.
Why Bhagat Singh was Hanged
Bhagat Singh had opened a front against the British to secure India’s independence. He, along with Sukhdev and Rajguru, assassinated British officer John Saunders in Lahore in 1928. The then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin, constituted a special tribunal to try the trio, which sentenced them to death. They were hanged inside Lahore Central Jail on March 23, 1931. Sukhdev was also found guilty in the case.
Significance of March 23
Shaheed Diwas, celebrated on March 23, commemorates the day when Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were hanged by the British government for their roles in the “dramatic violence” and struggle for Indian independence. Their contributions to the nation are revered even today, and they continue to be honored through literature, stories, films, and dramas, educating generations about their sacrifices.
