New Delhi, Mumbai Indians’ recent decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as the captain for the IPL 2024 season, ending Rohit Sharma’s decade-long captaincy, raised questions about a potential impact on Rohit’s role as the captain of the Indian cricket team. However, according to a recent report, Rohit Sharma remains the first-choice captain for the T20 World Cup in June.

Mumbai Indians surprised the cricketing community by naming Hardik Pandya as their new captain for the upcoming IPL season. This move, just four days before the auction in Dubai, marked the conclusion of Rohit Sharma’s illustrious 10-year tenure as the captain.

Speculations arose about whether this change in Mumbai Indians’ leadership would trigger a similar shift in the captaincy of the Indian cricket team, especially for the T20 format. Notably, Hardik Pandya has been the unofficial T20I captain for India for over a year.

A report in Dainik Jagran dismissed any immediate impact on Team India’s captaincy. A BCCI official responded with a clear “no” when asked if Hardik Pandya would captain the Indian team in the T20 World Cup. The official emphasized that Mumbai Indians’ decision is specific to the franchise and does not influence Team India. The report underscores that Rohit Sharma remains the all-format skipper for Team India.

During a recent meeting in Delhi with Team India head coach Rahul Dravid, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and Rohit Sharma, the latter expressed his desire to be confirmed as the captain for the T20 World Cup. While there was a verbal agreement, an official announcement is pending as the tournament is six months away.

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to multiple IPL victories during his ten-season captaincy, starting in 2013. Despite no official statement from Rohit following Mumbai Indians’ recent decision, reports suggest that he was informed about the change before the ODI World Cup in October.

The report concludes that the recent leadership transition at Mumbai Indians is unlikely to influence Team India’s captaincy, affirming Rohit Sharma’s status as the first-choice captain for the T20 World Cup.

Stay tuned for further developments on this evolving story.
