In a poignant moment of contemplation, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet Inc. – Google’s parent company, took a journey down memory lane, highlighting the remarkable transformation in communication technology. As Google celebrated its 25th anniversary, Pichai harked back to the early days of email and recounted a vivid memory involving his father’s maiden electronic missive.

Pichai, while pursuing his studies in the United States, vividly remembered the excitement of his father in India acquiring his inaugural email address. This momentous event promised a swifter and more cost-effective channel for father-son correspondence. Eager to put this newfound communication medium to the test, Pichai promptly dispatched a message to his father.

However, the story took an intriguing turn as Pichai found himself ensnared in a disconcerting period of anticipation, enduring two full days of suspense before receiving a response. The reply, when it finally arrived, bore the formal salutation, “Dear Mr. Pichai, email received. All is well.”

Perplexed by the inexplicable delay and the unexpected decorum, the perplexed Google CEO resorted to a more direct approach. He dialed his father to ascertain the cause of this delay. In a revelation that underscores the vintage nature of this tale, Pichai Sr. disclosed that, within his workplace, an obliging colleague was obliged to access the email on their office computer, print it out on paper, and physically deliver it to him. His father then dictated a response, which the colleague duly transcribed and eventually transmitted back to the eager son.

The passage of time and the relentless march of technology were underscored as Pichai juxtaposed this anecdote with a recent incident involving his teenage son. The contemporary scenario involved swift digital interactions, capturing intriguing moments with a quick succession of photographs, immediate sharing among friends, and lively message exchanges – all executed with an expediency that rendered Pichai Sr.’s era of email delays and manual transcriptions almost inconceivable.

Pichai poignantly concluded, “How I communicated with my dad all those years ago compared with how my son communicates today shows just how much change can happen across generations.”

This reflection offered a glimpse into the profound technological metamorphosis that has unfolded since Google’s inception on September 4, 1998, founded by computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin during their doctoral studies at Stanford University in California. The journey from those early days to the present, with Sundar Pichai at the helm, has seen Google diversify into a multitude of tech domains and introduce an array of pioneering products.

The reminiscence of this journey serves as a poignant testament to the ceaseless evolution of technology and communication, as we traverse the ever-advancing landscape of the digital age.
